Here s how my five are faring so far. The only sign that it s coping with stress is a slight wilting of the leaves. And once temperatures return to their customary above freezing winter norm those leaves regain turgor. This time of year arugula stands well. Without warm weather to accelerate its growth cycle this sweet and peppery salad green should provide weeks of pickings. Now in December the crop is showing signs of winter wear. The midveins of the older leaves are cracked and discolored though the rest of the leaves are usable. New leaves are free of damage but smaller. A really deep chill can bring an end to winter chard season. I still underestimate how slowly this crop grows. From an August seeding my rosette shaped plants are only sand dollar size. Ideally you harvest these sweet mild salad greens when they re about inches in diameter. With luck mine will be that size in February or March. It does best planted that early after March seed germin! ation is much dicier and early growth less vigorous. From our March planting the plants grew large enough for modest summer use. Picking large stems rather than pulling the entire plant ensures that smaller stems can turn into large ones. The plants are growing much more luxuriantly now with the arrival of cool weather. Absent severe cold the patch should keep in prime condition into April. Kale I planted Red Russian kale last spring. Its older leaves have died back or are tough and inedible. The newer leaves though are in fine fettle sweet and tender. In my long experience with this variety weather has never done it in. Its leaves may wilt a bit in extreme cold but they recover when the weather relents. First time winter gardeners would do well to plant this tasty nutritious crop. It s as close to guaranteed success as you can get. You can seed it as late as mid July here. Send questions to P. Box South Colby WA . Mendes likes going nude for gardening EARTHtimesorg
But she doesn t like being naked in front of cameras. com quoted her as saying I love being naked. I do everything in the nude even the gardening We are Cuban and it s a hot island. Why not go nude But she is not as comfortable being naked for her new movie with Joaquin Phoenix. The movie We Own the Night features her most graphic sex scene yet on screen. She was so nervous she had to get drunk to calm her nerves. It took the edge off. It s weird to see myself in bed with Joaquin up on the big screen. I told my mom she has to come minutes late. She wouldn t live through that first scene she d have a heart attack. Warner Park Rose Garden Plowed Under
Mills said I drove by there and saw where they had bulldozed the garden and cut down the trees. I said Oh no it s not going to come to that. It makes me very sad. After a time he said It got kind of rundown. He asked the city to donate the employees and equipment to rebuild it under his supervision. That made their ears perk up. He said the commissioners agreed to his proposal and the garden was revived. He said he got California rose grower friends to ship the thousand roses here at no cost. He said It was beautiful. We had tree roses hybrid tea floribundas. People really enjoyed coming to see them. But he said over the years the rose garden again declined.
